How to sign a pdf

  1. 1

    Open your PDF

Drop the document onto the page. The signature dialog opens automatically.

  2. 2

    Create your signature

Draw it with a mouse, trackpad or finger, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload a photo or scan of your signature.

  3. 3

    Place it and download

Drag the signature where it belongs, resize it with the corner handle, then press Download PDF.

Two different kinds of signature

A visual signature is a picture of your signature placed on the page. It is what almost everyone means by signing a PDF, and it is what most agreements and forms expect.

A digital certificate signature is a cryptographic operation using an X.509 certificate and private key. It produces a signature that a PDF reader can check to see whether the document changed after it was signed. It is available here as an advanced option, and we never present one as the other.

Getting a clean-looking signature

  • Drawing with a finger on a phone usually beats drawing with a mouse.
  • If you upload a photo of a signature on paper, a transparent PNG looks best — a JPG brings a white box with it.
  • The typed option renders your name in a handwriting-style face available on your device; nothing is fetched from a font CDN.
  • Blank space around a drawn or typed signature is trimmed automatically so it sits tight where you place it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my document uploaded when I sign it?
No. The document is opened and edited by code running in your browser, and the new PDF is generated on your device. There is no upload endpoint in this application — you can watch the network tab while you work.
Is a signature made this way legally binding?
That depends on your jurisdiction and the agreement in question, and nothing here is legal advice. Electronic signatures are widely accepted, but requirements differ by country and by contract. If the stakes are high, take proper advice.
What is the difference between this and a digital signature?
This places a visual mark on the page. A digital certificate signature additionally proves cryptographically that the file has not been altered since signing. Open Advanced digital signature on this page if you have a certificate.
Is my signature image stored anywhere?
No. It exists in the page's memory while you work and is gone when you close or reload the tab. It is never uploaded and never written to browser storage.
Can I add the date next to my signature?
Yes — switch to the Text tool and type it wherever you want it.
